Introduction

In line with the Tintri company ethos of simplicity driving Tintri technology, the Tintri upgrade process has been designed to be a customer driven process. Once a customer has downloaded the appropriate OS version from the Downloads section of support.tintri.com, along with the release notes for that version, the upgrade procedure is a simple two step process of

  1. Upload the new Tintri OS to the VMstore
  2. Log into the Tintri UI for the VMstore and click on upgrade in the settings page

Note that before an upgrade is started, customers should fully evaluate the Tintri VMstore release notes for the Tintri OS version.

Q & A

1. Do I need assistance from Tintri Support to upgrade my VMstore?

No, the Tintri Upgrade process is a customer driven procedure and there is no need to involve Tintri Support in the upgrade process unless the upgrade is not starting or completing. At this point, Tintri support may be required.

2. Are there any issues that will stop an upgrade from completing?

The VMstore must be in a redundant state and have no hardware failures for an upgrade to run. The hardware and redundancy status can be evaluated in the Tintri UI, simply log into the UI and click on the Hardware' tab. There are pre-checks within the Tintri Upgrade process to alert a customer to any issue prior to the upgrade starting.

3. What is the normal process that occurs during an upgrade?

The Tintri VMstore upgrade will first complete an upgrade on the secondary controller. On completion, this controller will restart and when it comes back online, the controller will automatically fail over to the newly upgraded controller and will then upgrade the initial primary controller. The upgrade process can be completed on a live system and will be transparent to the end user.

Note that before an upgrade is started, customers should fully evaluate the Tintri VMstore release notes for the Tintri OS version.
