Querying VMstore Active Directory Account Last Password Set Time

Applies To

Product(s): TIntri OS

Product Version(s): 3.0.0.1 or later

Bug(s): 41378, 41750

Introduction

This article describes the procedure to query the last password set time for the VMstore.  This procedure is used to postpone the system upgrade for a period of time in order to avoid a password change during upgrade.

Once VMstore is joined into Active Directory domain, it will periodically change the computer account password. The default interval is seven (7) days. The password change is done to avoid disabling the computer account by Group Policy.

Recommendation: Postpone upgrade by at least 15 minutes.

How-To

Run the following Windows PowerShell command on a Windows system joined to the same Active Directory domain as the VMstore (vmstore1):

Get-ADComputer –Identity vmstore1 –Properties PasswordLastSet

Example output

DistinguishedName......: CN=VMSTORE1,DC=vmlevel,DC=com

DNSHostName............: vmstore1.vmlevel.com

Enabled................: True

Name...................: WMSTORE1

ObjectClass............: computer

ObjectGUID.............: e9e4f300-ac4a-4a4a-a773-2b1c27b7202d

PasswordLastSet........: 3/6/2016 4:27:47 PM

SamAccountName.........: VMSTORE1$

SID....................: S-1-5-21-4117786418-643926125-3100845902-10717

UserPrincipalName......: host/VMSTORE1@VMLEVEL.COM

What this Example details

  • Notice the dates highlighed in the example: The next password will occur on March 13, 2016 (Sunday) 4:27PM, which is one week from the date in PasswordLastSet of  3/6/2016  4:27:47 PM

  • For this VMstore, avoid doing upgrades on Sundays around 4:27 PM.

To perform an upgrade at this time, wait for ten (10) minutes after the completion of the password update, and then run the PowerShell command to check Active Directory for password completion.
