Resetting the BMC

Product Version(s): Tintri OS v2.1 (and later)

Symptoms

 

Tintri support will notify the contact person for any asset showing symptoms of a hung BMC.

Resolution

 

A controller power cycle procedure is required if the BMC on one or both controllers is in a hung state. Use the procedure below to reset the BMC on both controllers.

 

  1. Log in to the VMstore Web UI and open the Hardware Dashboard.
  • Tintri OS v3.0 and earlier, hover over the Diagnose button and select Hardware in the drop-down menu.
  • Tintri OS v3.1 and later, click on the More button and select Hardware dashboard in the drop-down menu.

 

 
  1. Identify the Active (or primary) controller using the Hardware Dashboard.

  1. Disconnect the admin network cable(s) from the Standby (or secondary) controller, shown as Controller A in the example below.

  1. Reseat the Standby controller by pulling it out approximately 2 to 3 inches (do not fully remove the controller). Wait about 5 seconds then push the controller back in and wait for it to power on automatically.

 

 

Note: If the controller does not power on automatically after being reseated, press the power button located on the control panel at the front of the VMstore. DO NOT hold the power button down. A single, quick press-and-release push will power the controller on.

  1. Wait for the Standby controller to finish booting up using the Hardware Dashboard to monitor the status. Once boot up is complete, the Standby controller should appear as it did in Step 3.

  1. Reconnect the admin network cable(s) and wait for the Redundancy status to show State: REDUNDANT.

  1. The BMC has now been reset on the first controller.
  2. Disconnect the admin network cable(s) from the Active controller, shown as Controller B in the example below.

  1. Reseat the Active controller by pulling it out approximately 2 to 3 inches (do not fully remove the controller). Wait about 5 seconds then push the controller back in and wait for it to power on automatically.

 

Note: As before, if the controller does not power on automatically after being reseated, press the power button located on the control panel at the front of the VMstore. DO NOT hold the power button down. A single, quick press-and-release push will power the controller on.

  1. Wait for the controller to finish booting up using the Hardware Dashboard to monitor the status. You'll notice that the controller roles have switched. When the Active controller was reseated, the Standby controller took over automatically.

  1. Reconnect the admin network cable(s) and wait for the Redundancy status to show State: REDUNDANT.

  1. The BMC has now been reset on both controllers. The procedure is complete.
  2. Done.

# ipmitool mc reset warm

Takes about 2 minutes for BMC to return, check it with
# ipmitool sdr list
