Description

SyncVM fails to perform a File Level Restore (FLR) if VMware Change Block Tracking (CBT) is enabled. The issue occurs on the latest 6.0 and 6.5 ESXi patches as of February 2017.

Symptoms

SyncVM fails with the following logged in a VMstore pop up:

SyncVM operation failed: Add disk operation failed for [com.vmware.vim25.GenericVmConfigFault

In vCenter the details of the task failure shows the following:

Could not open or create change tracking file
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/0e48fce7-3c737262/<VMname>/tintri.flr.scsi0:2.1487065417286.<VMname>.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Failed to power on scsi0:3.
Failed to add disk scsi0:3.

Resolution

The issue is due to a pointer to the CBT file in the source vmdk descriptor file that gets copied to the target FLR vmdk descriptor file. This was not strictly checked on earlier ESXi versions.

Tintri Development are developing a fix for the issue in an upcoming maintenance releases of Tintri OS 4.2 and 4.3.

Workaround:

  1. Clone the VM snapshot from the Tintri Web UI.
  2. In vCenter, unregister (remove from inventory) the cloned VM,
  3. Use the 'Edit Settings' dialog for the VM in vCenter to add an Existing Hard Disk and browse to the cloned VM to add the needed vmdk file.
  4. Within the Guest OS, copy any needed files/data to the original vmdk.
  5. Using the 'Edit Settings' dialog for the VM to remove the added vmdk disk from the VM.
  6. Delete the cloned VM folder using the vCenter Datastore Browser. .
